Clean Room Design And Build Considerations
As a leader in ISO class-compliant cleanroom manufacturing, Clean Air Products designs cleanrooms that meet industry-regulated requirements, delivering high-performance and aesthetically appealing solutions. We manufacture Federal Standard 209E-compliant recirculating and non-recirculating modular hard wall and soft wall cleanrooms in a range of standard and custom configurations based on your specific industry requirements. We also supply pass-thrus, air showers, clean benches, desiccator cabinets, and other cleanroom products.
In this cleanroom design guide, we outline four key factors to consider when designing a cleanroom tailored to your specific application.
Step 1: Map Out the Desired Layout for Personnel and Material Flow
Plan the cleanroom layout in relation to personnel and material flow that will take place throughout the cleanroom. The goal is to limit contamination risks from people and materials. Keep critical areas away from access doors and traffic paths. You'll also need to consider the ISO Class ratings that will meet your application's requirements:- ISO Class 5: Class 5 allows a maximum of 100,000 particles at 0.1 microns or larger per cubic meter. This class is often used in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and electronics applications, where cleanliness is critical for quality control.
- ISO Class 6: Class 6 permits up to 1,000,000 particles at 0.1 microns or larger per cubic meter. Used in environments like food processing, laboratories, and some manufacturing facilities.
- ISO Class 7: Class 7 allows a maximum of 10,000,000 particles at 0.5 microns or larger per cubic meter. Commonly used in non-critical manufacturing and production environments.
- ISO Class 8: Class 8 permits a maximum of 35,200,000 particles at 0.5 microns or larger per cubic meter. Found in less critical manufacturing or industrial settings.
Step 2: Filter and Airflow Considerations
At Clean Air Products, you can choose from two types of laminar flow hard clean rooms: recirculating and non-recirculating. Clean Air Products utilizes High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) or Ultra-Low Penetration Air (ULPA) filters for increased particle removal in most cleanroom designs, with ISO Class ratings ranging from ISO Class 1 to ISO Class 8. The ISO Class rating determines the number of air changes per hour, as well as ceiling coverage percentages:- ISO Class 1 & 2: 500-750 air changes per hour, with a ceiling coverage of 80–100%.
- ISO Class 3: 500-750 air changes per hour, with a ceiling coverage of 60-100%
- ISO Class 4: 400-750 air changes per hour, with a ceiling coverage of 50-90%
- ISO Class 5: 240-600 air changes per hour, with a ceiling coverage of 35-70%
- ISO Class 6: 150-240 air changes per hour, with a ceiling coverage of 25-40%
- ISO Class 7: 60-150 air changes per hour, with a ceiling coverage of 15-25%
- ISO Class 8: 5-60 air changes per hour, with a ceiling coverage of 5-15%
Step 3: Clean Room Construction Considerations
Your product and process requirements will determine which cleanroom is best suited to your needs. Clean Air Products offers cleanroom enclosures with standard ceiling heights of 8, 9, or 10 feet, with custom heights and sizes available. Softwall cleanrooms utilize clear, flame-retardant 40-mil vinyl, while hardwall designs can be configured as either recirculating or non-recirculating to meet specific performance standards. Additional features like air showers and pass-thru chambers can increase entry and exit efficiency while removing contamination from products and personnel. All Clean Air Product cleanrooms are designed to account for the following factors:
- Temperature control
- Humidity Control
- Effective Filtration
- Pressure
- Electrical Distribution & More
Step 4: Clean Room Power Requirements
All motors, HVAC, and equipment designed to power the cleanroom are on isolated breakers. Clean Air Products'powered HEPA filter units, lighting systems, and ceiling panels are sealed to the ceiling grid system with gasket material. Additional optional cleanroom electrical features include flow-through lights, prefabricated wiring kits, customized electrical outputs, and more.
